Front Royal / Warren County, VA

Front Royal is the northern gateway to the Shenandoah Valley and Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. This is the place to enjoy the crown jewel of outdoor recreation and the Canoe Capital of Virginia.

Originally called LeHewtown (after Peter LeHew, a French Huguenot who purchased 200 acres here in 1754), the Town was later purchased by a group of real estate speculators who arranged to have it incorporated as Front Royal November 15, 1788. Rail service was established in 1854 with the construction of the Alexandria, Orange and Manassas Gap Railroad between Manassas and Riverton. This line was soon extended to Strasburg in time to become a factor in the Battle of Front Royal on May 23, 1862 and throughout the Civil War.

Today Front Royal is within reach of the Shenandoah National Park and The Appalachian Trail, Shenandoah River State Park, and George Washington National Forest, visitors can backcountry, hike, or paddle in a variety of settings. Find biking routes, boat landings, canoeing and kayaking, tubing, golf, horseback riding and scenic airplane and balloon rides.

Downriver Canoe Company or Front Royal Canoe Company will take you on your Shenandoah River Trip along the legendary river nestled between the Shenandoah National Park and the George Washington National Forest. Discover Bowling Green Country Club for two 18 hole golf courses amid the beauty and backdrop of mountain views.

Just a stone’s throw from our Nation’s capital but miles from the hustle and bustle, free parking is available at the Gazebo when you visit our Historic Downtown area. Within walking distance of restaurants, art galleries and unique shopping, this is the place to relax along our tree lined streets. Start your visit at the Visitor Center on Main Street and get your Walking Tour brochure. There’s no charge and the folks are really friendly. Check for events at the Gazebo Gatherings during the summer.  In Front Royal you can unwind, reconnect and rediscover!
